New contract for Kern County drivers; protecting Teamster work at UPS

Local 87 won a grievance that protects Teamster work at UPS.

Drivers and dispatchers in Kern County represented by Local 87 have overwhelmingly ratified a new contract.

The 56 Teamsters in the unit provide public transportation and shuttle services for Bakersfield, Mojave, Lake Isabella, Tehachapi and Frazier Park.

The new contract includes a 17% wage increase over the life of the agreement, minimum rest protections between shifts, and expanded holiday eligibility for full and part-time employees.  These members previously worked for WEDRIVEU and will be transitioning to MTM Transit.

Panama-Buena Vista School District Teamsters laud new contract

A group of 243 workers at Panama-Buena Vista Union School District, represented by Teamsters Local 87, have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new agreement with the K-8 public school district which serves the Bakersfield community across 25 schools.

“This strong agreement is vital for me, my colleagues, and our students across the district,” said Joseph Diaz, a maintenance department worker and chief shop steward. “When negotiations began, we knew that we needed to remain united to get what we deserve and ensure we can continue to show up for our students when they need us most.

Local 87 Construction Division members are adding to their ranks at the Bakersfield Renewable Fuels Project.

Back in September of 2021, Local 87 Construction Division Member Robert Zambrano was dispatched to the Bakersfield Renewable Fuels Project. When he arrived on the jobsite, there was only one Teamster on site. As the job went on, he started to add more brothers to cover Teamsters Local 87’s work scope. Bringing in new members

After a months-long fight that included layoffs, election challenges by the company, and several unfair labor practice charges filed by the union, on February 16, 2021, 22 Sierra Transport LLC drivers based in Bakersfield voted to join Teamsters Local 87.

“This huge victory was won despite the pandemic and the Trump NLRB,” says Secretary-Treasurer John Moralez. “Clearly, the Sierra drivers really wanted union representation because they stood strong through all kinds of employer shenanigans.”

The Settlement Stipulation includes returning the five laid-off employees to work and ensuring that the employer pays out more than $76,000 in back wages to those who were wrongfully laid off.

Kern County’s oldest bakery is celebrating 75 years in business, with Teamster drivers delivering their product since the 1970s.

Emmanuel Segura, a Pyrenees driver and Local 87 member since 2012, says he enjoys continuing the legacy and he appreciates the collective bargaining agreement that provides stability.
