(BAKERSFIELD, Calif.) – Thirty drivers at High Desert Distributing in Bakersfield, Calif., will now be represented by Teamsters Local 87. The drivers voted for strong union representation to secure higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions.

Teamsters are breaking barriers in the Construction and Refinery industries

Local 87 Construction Division members are adding to their ranks at the Bakersfield Renewable Fuels Project.

Back in September of 2021, Local 87 Construction Division Member Robert Zambrano was dispatched to the Bakersfield Renewable Fuels Project. When he arrived on the jobsite, there was only one Teamster on site. As the job went on, he started to add more brothers to cover Teamsters Local 87’s work scope. Bringing in new members

After a months-long fight that included layoffs, election challenges by the company, and several unfair labor practice charges filed by the union, on February 16, 2021, 22 Sierra Transport LLC drivers based in Bakersfield voted to join Teamsters Local 87.

“This huge victory was won despite the pandemic and the Trump NLRB,” says Secretary-Treasurer John Moralez. “Clearly, the Sierra drivers really wanted union representation because they stood strong through all kinds of employer shenanigans.”

The Settlement Stipulation includes returning the five laid-off employees to work and ensuring that the employer pays out more than $76,000 in back wages to those who were wrongfully laid off.

75 years and a Teamster legacy

Kern County’s oldest bakery is celebrating 75 years in business, with Teamster drivers delivering their product since the 1970s.

Emmanuel Segura, a Pyrenees driver and Local 87 member since 2012, says he enjoys continuing the legacy and he appreciates the collective bargaining agreement that provides stability. Local 87 recognizes Emmanuel and all Local 87 members for their hard work in ensuring Teamster success into 2020 and beyond.
