Teamsters Local 431 has had a busy few months with contract negotiations, shop steward seminars and educating our members about the state of our industries. Recent contract ratifications include Reyes Coca Cola, and Wilbur Ellis saw a solid reduction in the cost of their health care. “All of our business agents and officers try to preserve the rights and conditions that we worked so hard to achieve,” says Principal Officer Peter Nuñez.

On September 25, the Sun-Maid workers ended their 15-day strike and returned to the job after reaching a new contract agreement with the corporation. The workers had been picketing for several weeks after negotiations between the company and the Teamsters union broke down.
The new agreement includes monthly medical contributions, competitive market wages, and increased pension contributions in the second and third year of the agreement.
“It’s about a nine-percent increase in value overall from the previous contract,” says Local 431 Secretary-Treasurer Peter Nuñez.

After rejecting four contract offers from Sun-Maid, nearly 500 members of Local 431 took to the hot Fresno streets on September 10 to start a work stoppage that will last until they get a contract that they can live with.
“The major issue is that the company insists that our folks contribute to their health plan for the first time ever,” says Principal Officer Peter Núñez. “They offered minimal wage increases to offset some of the out-of-pocket health costs.
Keep readingOn May 19, the Union Park Foundation in Fresno held their third annual event to honor fallen workers in the San Joaquin Valley. Opening ceremonies included the Fresno Police Department placing a wreath on the Union Park monument, which is located at the Fresno Fairgrounds.
“Teamsters Local 431, Joint Council 7 and many unions from around the Valley had joined together to help fund the building of this park,” reports Local 431 Business Rep Steve Sharp.
