The 40 drivers and mechanics at GreenWaste of Palo Alto in Santa Clara voted overwhelmingly in November to become Teamsters. This group will join the thousands of waste workers throughout the Bay Area already represented by Local 350.

Clericals at Recology of the Coast ratify first contract

The three-person clerical unit at Recology of the Coast in Pacifica, CA, voted in September to ratify their first-ever agreement with the Teamsters Local 350. The unit had initially voted to join the union in May of 2022.

SF Scavenger mechanics join Teamsters

Mechanics at South San Francisco Scavenger Company in South San Francisco voted to join Teamsters Local 350. The nine-worker unit voted by mail and ballots were tabulated on August 17.

“I want to commend these workers for their courage and thank them for their genuine curiosity about what it means to be in a union and to be represented,” said Business Representative Robert Sandoval. “These workers who make the operations run want to know their rights and what can be afforded to them personally through collective bargaining.”

The mechanics at the South San Francisco Scavenger Company were one of the few remaining non-union worker groups within Local 350’s jurisdiction.

California Waste Solutions members ratify new contract

On April 19, 2022, the 72 drivers and mechanics at California Waste Solutions (CWS) in San Jose voted nearly unanimously to ratify their new collective bargaining agreement.

Bringing solid waste workers up to par with the rest of the county

After almost nine months of talks and hard-bargaining on economics, the members at Recology of the Coast ratified their new five-year successor collective bargaining agreement by a 94% margin on March 3, 2022. 

“There was a considerable gap between the offers we were getting from the company and where we needed to be. We were set to vote a strike authorization but at the 11th hour, we received a proposal which stayed our vote and allowed us to resume bargaining,” said lead negotiator and Business Representative Robert Sandoval.

Workers at Recology’s organics unit in Gilroy join union

On October 22, 2021, the eight-person Recology South Valley Organics unit located in Gilroy, CA voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 350.

“Organize, Organize, Organize – that’s been the rallying cry of the Teamsters organization and a number one priority for me as an officer of Local 350,” said President Sergio Arrañaga. “This brave unit of women and men knew that organizing and joining the fold was the only way to ensure their own contract with good economics and worker protection language that they’ve never had before.”

This small Recology unit had been one of the last remaining non-union holdouts in the Locals jurisdiction but had long known of the benefits received by their union counterparts.

Members at South SF Scavenger ratify historic, lucrative contract

The 92 members at the South San Francisco Scavengers/Blue Line Transfer Station voted overwhelmingly in favor of a historic new collective bargaining agreement at Local 350’s first in-person ratification meeting since the start of the pandemic. These members service the cities of Millbrae, Brisbane, South San Francisco, and the San Francisco International Airport.
