Teamsters California Backs “California Billionaire Tax”

“It’s time to hold Big Tech Billionaires accountable for destroying our jobs and robbing families of our healthcare”

Sacramento, CA – Today, Teamsters California announced endorsing the California  Billionaire Tax, the largest union to date, backing the November ballot measure. As the unified voice of 250,000 California members, Teamsters California is leading the fight for working people and their jobs by challenging the Big Tech agenda aimed at replacing family-supporting jobs with robots.

Teamsters California Co-Chairs Peter Finn and Victor Mineros said the following:

“The fight to pass the California Billionaire Tax is a fight to protect workers’ ability to afford living in California; it’s a fight Teamsters California will continue to lead.

“The same Big Tech Billionaires shedding crocodile tears over the idea of paying their fair share of taxes while amassing sky-high piles of cash are exploiting a rigged system that makes delivery workers and bus drivers pay higher rates than the AI executives trying to wipe away our jobs.

“California’s 250,000 Teamsters members refuse to stand idle while Big Tech replaces family-supporting jobs with unaccountable and unsafe AI. We will hold tech CEOs accountable to prevent hospitals from closing and prevent more families from being priced out of health care coverage. Our members are ready to put in the work to pass this common sense, one-time tax on California’s 200 billionaires this November.

“The same billionaires driving up the costs of housing, groceries, and utilities want their workers to pay more for healthcare every time we sit down at the bargaining table; now they want working people to pay even more for our health care so the executives can get even more tax breaks.

“Roughly 200 California billionaires hold an astounding $2 trillion in wealth; each of the Billionaires could spend $500 million a year from their interest earnings alone and not touch a penny of their wealth. But for the greedy corporations and their billionaire owners, it’s never enough – they won’t be satisfied until they’ve replaced every worker with a robot that fuels their fortunes.

This year, Teamsters California is also advancing a bold legislative package centered on defending working people, affordability and strengthening the backbone of our economy— middle class Californians. The legislative agenda is taking aim at the outsized power of greedy corporations and Big Tech whose market dominance and labor practices undermine fair competition and threaten the access to good jobs across industries.

The legislative package prioritizes protecting workers and the public from eliminating good jobs with robots, the dangers of autonomous vehicles threatening our community’s public safety and ensuring that our state’s economic growth benefits everyday Californians—not just corporate executives and shareholders.

Teamsters California is leading the fight on public policy and at the ballot box to advance the core economic issues that matter most to everyday Californians: uplifting good jobs, ensuring fair wages, and securing our right to raise families in the communities we serve. Right now, we’re in the fight of our lives: while Big Tech pushes a future that puts profits over people, eliminates jobs and drives working families out of our communities, Teamsters are standing together to fight for a California that works for all of us.
