Over 1,000 Staff at MarinHealth Conclude 24-hour Unfair Labor Practice Strike
Despite the 24-hour strike ending, workers have been locked out until Saturday
(GREENBRAE, CALIF.) — This week, hundreds of Teamsters at MarinHealth Medical Center held a 24-hour Unfair Labor Practice Strike amid nearly a year of bad-faith bargaining by the Hospital. Teamsters members have been notified by MarinHealththat they are locked out and will not be able to return to work until Saturday, February 21.
Teamsters marched on the hospital in the rain, wind and cold, day and night, anchored by the fact that MarinHealth Medical Center has failed over the course of nearly 12 months to bring a proposal to the bargaining table that has met members needs for wage increases to keep up with the cost of living in the region and acceptable health care coverage that does not increase monthly coverage costs by hundreds of dollars.
“We’re on the street today for one simple reason, to send a message to this hospital, that it’s the people, that wake up every day and go into the hospital and provide care for our community that make this hospital run,” said Peter Finn, Teamsters Local 856 Secretary-Treasurer and Teamsters Joint Council 7 President.
The Teamsters were joined by nurses represented by the California Nurses Association who were also on strike and maintenance workers and engineers who are represented by Operating Engineers Local 39 were also rallying in support of their colleagues at the hospital on a sympathy strike.
Susanna Farber, Teamsters Local 856 Vice President and Chief Negotiator said, “MarinHealth, we are out here today sending a unified message, it is well overdue that you come to the table with a proposal that respects the workers that deliver premier patient care to everyone who walks through those doors. The games need to end, workers have had enough of not getting the respect they deserve for the work they deliver, we need a fair contract now.”
As bargaining continues MarinHealth grows the list of Unfair Labor Practices they have committed by refusing to provide necessary, relevant, and correct information needed to understand the costs of their healthcare proposal and managers acting out of retaliation to workers by locking them out until Saturday morning.
Steven Batson, Anesthesiology Technician at MarinHealth and Teamsters Local 856 member said, “The lies MarinHealth has painted for the public will continue unless we continue to stand together and not back down until we have a fair contract.” He added, “Surgeries were canceled or rescheduled despite the Hospital saying operations would continue as normal, but that is not true. This has been the story of our nearly yearlong negotiations, failure by MarinHealth to provide necessary, correct and relevant information and now the lies are unfortunately spreading to the public.”
Negotiations between Teamsters Local 856 and MarinHealth are scheduled to resume next week beginning on Friday, February 27.
